i.c.stars Milwaukee partnered with GE Healthcare to deliver a transformative Design Thinking workshop, which introduced our cycle 16 interns to the core principles of innovation used in real-world healthcare solutions. This session exemplified the power of experiential learning, giving participants hands-on exposure to the same methodologies GE Healthcare leverages to tackle design challenges.
Using GE Healthcare’s Pediatric Adventure Series as the central challenge, interns were guided through a highly engaging, five-stage Design Thinking process: Inquire, Ignite, Imagine, Invent, and Inspire. This framework allowed them to build empathy for users, focus on problem discovery, ideate innovative solutions, and prototype their concepts in small teams.
Interns tapped into their own experiences with radiology, read through persona cards, and collaborated to develop solutions that addressed the needs of pediatric patients. The energy in the room was palpable as teams brainstormed ideas and crafted prototypes, ultimately sharing their solutions with the group.
The feedback we gathered from participants demonstrated the powerful impact of this session. Interns praised the interactive nature of the workshop, noting how it pushed them to embrace creativity without fear of “bad ideas.” Many highlighted the importance of understanding the problem before rushing to solutions—an essential mindset for both personal growth and future careers in tech.
Facilitators from GE Healthcare were commended for their energetic approach, fostering a collaborative environment where everyone felt encouraged to participate. By the end of the session, the interns walked away with not only a deeper understanding of the Design Thinking process but also a strong sense of how these skills translate to problem-solving in their future roles.
