Throughout history, activism has been a driving force for social change, paving the way for new opportunities, equitable systems, and empowered communities. From grassroots movements to corporate diversity initiatives, activism has always been a catalyst for progress. At Hack the Dream, we celebrate this transformative power by exploring how movements of the past, like the Brown Berets, continue to inspire leadership, equity, and innovation today.

The Brown Berets: A Legacy of Activism and Community Leadership

Born out of the Chicano Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s, the Brown Berets were a youth-led organization dedicated to advancing social justice, educational equity, and community empowerment. Rooted in the fight against systemic discrimination, the Brown Berets organized around critical issues such as access to quality education, fair housing, and police reform.

Much like César Chávez’s work in labor rights, the Brown Berets focused on empowering historically marginalized communities through activism and civic engagement. They created educational programs, community service initiatives, and leadership opportunities to uplift the next generation and foster sustainable change.

Blanca Gonzalez: Continuing the Mission Through i.c.stars

The spirit of the Brown Berets lives on through modern leaders like Blanca Gonzalez, Executive Director of i.c.stars Milwaukee. With a personal connection to this legacy—her father and godfather were Brown Berets—Blanca continues the work of empowering communities through leadership and education.

At i.c.stars, Blanca helps lead an intensive workforce development program that transforms adults from underrepresented backgrounds into technology and civic leaders. By blending technical training, real-world problem-solving, and professional mentorship, i.c.stars is creating the next generation of change agents—individuals who will challenge systemic barriers in tech, leadership, and beyond.

Andres Chavez: Honoring a Legacy, Inspiring the Future

We are honored to welcome Andres Chavez, grandson of César Chávez and Executive Director of the National Chavez Center, as the keynote speaker for Hack the Dream. Through his work, Andres ensures that his grandfather’s legacy of activism and social justice continues to inspire future generations. He leads initiatives that promote education, historical preservation, and advocacy, ensuring that the values of the past remain a guiding light for the future.

Hack the Dream: Where Activism Meets Innovation

At Hack the Dream, we recognize that the fight for equity doesn’t stop at activism—it evolves into innovation. Just as the Brown Berets mobilized communities for change, today’s leaders—whether in tech, education, or corporate spaces—are shaping a more inclusive future. The journey from activism to innovation is about leveraging knowledge, access, and leadership to break down barriers and create sustainable impact.

Join us as we explore how the legacies of activism, advocacy, and leadership continue to fuel progress. Through storytelling, collaboration, and action, we are empowering the next generation to turn activism into innovation.
